Creating a Town Square
Premium Outlets contacted FRCH to help create an outlet center that could play the role of the city center in Blackwood,NJ, an unincorporated section of Gloucester Township, between key two key economic hubs, Philadelphia and Atlantic City. The outlets were intended to become a social hub for the area, offering not only retail and restaurant offerings but economic development in the form of jobs and a simulated town center for the entire community to utilize.
In response, FRCH created a nearly 400,000 square foot, open-air outlet center that is home to nearly 90 retailers, with design inspired by colonial revival architecture, a nod to a classic New England town square. At the center of the mall is 6,000 square feet of green space with artificial grass. This expansive front lawn is a key placemaking aspect of the center, providing green-space for unlimited community and complex-hosted events. The square features ample open seating, benches, a fountain, fire pit, and food kiosks. The artificial turf is low maintenance, inviting, and allows events to be held year-round.
